ACID TEST FOR SOME OF OUR RECOMMENDATIONS IN SHORT TERM PLANS

By · Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Yesterday was an acid test for some of our recommendations in Short Term Plans. Time & again we have been talking about investing in lower average maturity/high accrual short term plans. Religare is one year in average maturity with 80% of the portfolio in Money Market instruments & only 20% in MTM & Templeton is 0.90 years in average maturity with higher gross accrual and 25% portfolio in PTCs.

Inspite of the CRISIL Bond Matrix having gone up both on short end & long end of the curve post the Budget announcements & subsequent rise in yields due to higher than expected Fiscal Deficit numbers, both these schemes have registered one day positive returns as is evident from below:

We continue to recommend investments in these Short Term Plans with 3-6 month investment horizon ( min 4 months for Templeton as it has exit load issue). These schemes gain more importance in every ones portfolio in these trying volatile debt market times. For more details on both these schemes, please refer to my earlier notes on my blog: http://blog.msjcapital.com

What is the secret of Templeton India STP giving such high return, where the other Short Term funds could give only half of it.

How long it is likely to give such high return. A case in point is Sundaram BNP Flexi Bond, which also gave very high returns for about a month on a daily basis, but now has come down.

Kindly clarify about Templeton India STP, why & how they have managed such high return & is it likely to continue and is the Portfolio safe.

Regards,

Your kind view on:-

1. Kotak Bond-Short Term (decent performance)

2. Reliance Short Term, (no exit load)
